The Bangladesh Business Award started with the following three categories in the year 2000

Businessperson of the Year Award: Presented to the most deserving individual for outstanding corporate success. The candidate must possess integrity, business and financial acumen, management skills and leadership qualities.

Outstanding Woman in Business Award: Presented to the most deserving woman in business or profession who has made an outstanding contribution to her company or profession and can be considered as a model for other women in business.

Enterprise of the Year Award: Presented to the small or medium-sized company that has distinguished itself through entrepreneurial spirit and a record of innovation.

Best Joint Venture Enterprise of the Year - an additional category was introduced in the year 2002. This award is presented to the most deserving joint venture company in Bangladesh for its distinguished performance.

Finally from 2007 a new category - Best Financial Institution of the Year has been introduced.

To acknowledge publicly the vital contributions made by companies and individuals to Bangladesh business.

To create an environment which will encourage, sustain the entrepreneurial spirit and enhance standards of corporate management in Bangladesh.

To illustrate the depth of talent that exists in the country by high-lighting nominees success stories.

To enable the organizers, The Daily Star and DHL, to fulfill their responsibilities as good corporate citizens.
